The Gold Coast Hockey Centre is proud to announce it will host the Hockey Queensland Under 18 State Championships from 15–17 May 2026.

This premier event will bring together the state’s top young hockey talent, with teams from across Queensland competing over three exciting days of high-level competition. The tournament is a key fixture on the Hockey Queensland calendar and provides a platform for emerging athletes to showcase their skills and represent their regions.

Hosting the championships is a significant opportunity for the Gold Coast Hockey Centre, highlighting the venue’s reputation as a leading facility for major sporting events. The event is also expected to deliver strong community engagement and economic benefits, with players, officials, and supporters travelling to the region.

Spectators are encouraged to come along and support the next generation of hockey stars, with a full schedule of matches set to take place across the weekend.

The new Atrium is where the existing building has been blended with the new building at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre.  The brand new staircase takes visitors up to the new building with viewing available on both sides.  The Atrium will fast become the new meeting place where players and fans will meet and mingle.  The Atrium also provides direct ground level viewing access to both fields on the Eastern & Western sides of the precinct.

On the first level the Atrium has a walkway linking the existing building with the new building providing easy access.  There is undercover seating and a designated wheelchair viewing area to view the Eastern turf.

The Atrium has both an open roof and closed roof section for protection from all weather conditions.  With a brand new drinking fountain and garden area it is a great addition to the Hockey centre and sure to be the new meeting point when the facility opens.

The change room facilities is one of the big changes in player comfort you will notice when you visit the new Gold Coast Hockey Precinct.  Previously there were only two change room facilities in the original building.  The two original change rooms have also been renovated and will now become our umpire and officials change rooms.

Under the new building there are now 4 brand new change room facilities that will service both the Eastern Turf and Western Turf via a single corridor.  What makes this even more impressive is that these 4 change rooms can be converted into 8 separate change rooms via a sliding dividing wall. This important change will enable up to 8 teams to use the change rooms at the same time.  So teams coming off either field won’t be inconvenienced by teams coming on.  This important change will be vital when we host large championships at the Gold Coast Hockey Precinct.  It will enable us to be able to get teams on and off fields quickly and efficiently.

The GCHMG board has been working tirelessly with contractors and the Commonwealth Games organising committee to not only ensure the new Hockey precinct is hockey ready, but also importantly it remains sustainable financially moving forward.  The priority has been to make sure we build a legacy asset that isn’t costly to maintain or becomes a white elephant like some Olympic and Commonwealth Games venues have done previously.

When the GCHMG received the schedule of works in September a number of important items required further attention to make sure they were not missing from the final completed project.  Submissions were made that the GCHMG felt were critical components for the sustainability of the facility post games.  These changes have included:

  • Additional refurbishment of the existing building to match the quality of new facilities built from scratch.
  • Pitch irrigation upgrades with algaecide treatment stations and pressure flow upgrades to reduce wind mitigation.
  • Rainwater harvesting for Pitch irrigation
  • 2 cool rooms including strengthening the slabs to accommodate them
  • Complete rebuild of the canteen and all new equipment
  • Changes to the kitchen and bar area to make them more serviceable
  • Changes to the field netting, lights and light maintenance systems and field perimeter fencing
  • Post GC2018 the local Hockey community we will also receive a third grass pitch as well as developing the warm up area (at the north end of the precinct) into a 3/4 junior grass field fully reticulated and lighted.

​These important changes will benefit the entire Gold Coast Hockey community and allow for growth well into the future.

The GCHMG has created a sustainable budget that will ensure the assets are kept in premium condition and refurbished when required.

Turf fees have been minimised to make them the most competitive in the South East Region.  Members will have access to brand new world class facilities at the most competitive rates.

Our History

​Keith Hunt Park in Labrador has been identified as the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games hockey competition venue and is undergoing significant redevelopment in preparation for the event. This site is home to both the Gold Coast Hockey Association (GCHA) and Labrador Hockey Club (LHC) with both organisations each previously holding a lease over a clubhouse and artificial turf hockey field with City of Gold Coast (CGC).
 
Over the past two years, City of Gold Coast, Gold Coast Hockey Association, Labrador Hockey Club and Hockey Queensland have been engaged in numerous meetings and discussions to identify what implications the redevelopment will pose on both GCHA and LHC and what solutions/model of operation could best be implemented to maximise the opportunities the redevelopment will create.  It has always been acknowledged that the redevelopment will require both GCHA and LHC to make changes to the way they have currently been operating.
 
While it is acknowledged that the redevelopment of the site presents an opportunity for the sport of hockey in the city of Gold Coast and all associated stakeholders, in order to maximise the sustainability of the sport it was determined a new facility management entity - Gold Coast Hockey Management Group (GCHMG) would be established to manage the facility with GCHA, LHC and all other hockey clubs / associations liaising with the new entity in relation to their use of the site.

After consulting with all stakeholders, the GCHMG became an Incorporated Association in November 2015.  GCHMG is a not-for-profit entity with its main purpose being to manage the Gold Coast Hockey precinct.  It is important to note that Hockey Queensland’s role on the GCHMG is to facilitate the development of a functional, sustainable operating model with the members of the GCHMG.  The future of the GCHMG remains with the Gold Coast hockey community and as such, Hockey Queensland will be removing its representation from the GCHMG post the Commonwealth Games. 

What does the GCHMG do?

GCHMG will manage the new Gold Coast Hockey Precinct including:
  • Field hire/bookings and invoicing
  • Function room hire/bookings
  • All maintenance of the facility
  • Managing the canteen and bar
  • Marketing of the facility itself, 
  • Work health and safety for the facility and site

GCHA will continue to manage the competition and competition draw. Under the Turf Utilization Agreement with GCHMG, GCHA will coordinate the training times for all the clubs (except LHC) and will forward proposed training times to GCHMG to complete the booking.  The running of the competition remains the responsibility of GCHA as per normal.
GCHMG will have the role and function to ensure that everything you need from a facilities point of view is available and working when you turn up for competition or training, Gates are open, Toilets are open and clean, turf watered correctly, lights are on when needed, score board turned on and working, Canteen and bar are open when required.  

We are looking at Practical Completion date at this stage of the 31st March 2017
